Choosing the Right Laptop in 2025
Shopping for a new laptop in 2025 can be overwhelming. With so many brands, specs, and price points, it’s hard to know what’s worth your money — and what will leave you frustrated in a year or two.
At Lyme PC Repair, we help our clients choose the right device for their needs before they buy, saving them time, money, and headaches. One thing we’ve learned after hundreds of setups and migrations? Dell still builds some of the best everyday consumer laptops — as long as you pick the right models.
Today, we’re highlighting two solid options we’ve been recommending for home users and small businesses.
Dell 16 Laptop (Base $549 as of 9/10/2025)
Why We Like It
- Excellent price-to-performance ratio for everyday use
- Intel® Core™ 5 120U processor with 10 cores — plenty of power for Windows 11
- 16GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB NVMe SSD → fast boot times and smooth multitasking
- 16″ FHD+ IPS display with touchscreen support
- USB-C with Power Delivery, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and HDMI included
- Comfortable full-size keyboard with numeric pad
- Lightweight for its size at 4.37 lbs
Best For
- Home users
- Students
- Light work-from-home setups
- Anyone upgrading from an older Windows 10 device
Considerations
- No HDMI 2.1 → capped at 1080p external display output
- Basic webcam and speakers — fine for video calls, but not studio-grade
- Realtek Wi-Fi card instead of Intel — slightly less reliable in crowded networks
Dell 16 Pro Laptop (Base $739 as of 9/10/2025)
Why We Like It
- Same Intel® Core™ 5 120U processor as the consumer model
- Windows 11 Pro pre-installed — better for business environments
- 16GB DDR5 RAM + 256GB NVMe SSD — snappy performance for productivity tasks
- Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 → stronger, more stable wireless connectivity
- Wired Ethernet Option!!
- Better port selection, including Thunderbolt™ 4 and HDMI 2.1
- More premium build quality and backlit keyboard
- ExpressCharge™ support for faster charging
Best For
- Small business owners
- Professionals needing stronger connectivity
- Users running multiple displays or docking stations
- Anyone wanting Windows 11 Pro features like BitLocker and domain join
Considerations
- Higher price point for smaller storage (256GB SSD)
- No built-in antivirus trial — not a dealbreaker since we install better solutions anyway
- Slightly heavier chassis than the consumer version

What to Avoid in 2025
While Dell does a great job in the everyday consumer space, there are a few traps to watch for:
- Gaming laptops for non-gamers → expensive, heavy, and overpowered for basic use. Dell is not the company for this, in our opinion.
- Low-spec bargain models → anything under 8GB RAM or with mechanical hard drives will struggle on Windows 11.
- Cheap retail bundles → many “big box specials” look good on paper but ship outdated hardware.
